Its reputation is now worldwide. The plant is part of Malagasy oral tradition and practice, but its first <strong data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"982\">written mentions<\/strong> date back to colonial times (Razafimandimby &amp; Queste, 2024). <strong>French<\/strong> missionaries and <strong>explorers<\/strong> described a small berry used in <strong>traditional medicine<\/strong> to treat <strong>venereal diseases and colic<\/strong>. At the time, specimens of this wild pepper were sent to the <strong>Mus\u00e9um national d&#8217;histoire naturelle in Paris<\/strong>.<\/p><p>It wasn&#8217;t until the early 2000s that voatsiperifery gained <strong data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1538\">international fame<\/strong>. Two Michelin-starred French chefs rediscovered it around 2004, triggering a gradual craze: since 2010, worldwide demand has exploded. The ingredient was then imported to Europe as a <strong>&#8220;new forest pepper&#8221;,<\/strong> whose subtle flavor seduced haute gastronomie.<\/p><p>In Malagasy, the name <em data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2104\">voatsiperifery<\/em> comes from <strong data-start=\"2114\" data-end=\"2121\">voa<\/strong> (&#8220;fruit&#8221;) and <em data-start=\"2137\" data-end=\"2150\">tsiperifery<\/em>, meaning &#8220;that makes sores non-existent&#8221;. This name evokes the plant&#8217;s traditional medicinal use to <strong data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2297\">heal wounds <\/strong>(Razafimandimby &amp; Queste, 2024). Its name also underlines its botanical link: voatsiperifery is a vine in the Piperaceae family, closely related to black pepper<em data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2487\">(Piper nigrum<\/em>). Its rarity and the difficulty of harvesting gave it a special value, quite different from the large-scale cultivated peppers introduced later through colonial trade.  <\/p><p data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"2355\">It wasn&#8217;t until the end of the XX\u1d49 century that Voatsiperifery began to gain international recognition, particularly from chefs and specialist grocery stores, who were interested not only in its <strong data-start=\"2086\" data-end=\"2144\">woody, slightly lemony and floral aromatic profile<\/strong>, but also in its singular history. This recent recognition is part of a wider movement to promote <strong data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2313\">wild spices and local knowledge<\/strong>, without heavy industrial processing.<\/p><p data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2817\">Voatsiperifery is intimately linked to<strong data-start=\"2446\" data-end=\"2479\">Madagascar&#8217;s forest ecosystem<\/strong>. Its growth depends on preserved forests, making it an emblematic example of a spice whose very existence is linked to environmental balance. Traditional harvesting practices are based on selective picking, aimed at preserving the liana and allowing the plant to regenerate naturally.<\/p><p data-start=\"2819\" data-end=\"3107\">Today, this territorial and ecological dimension is an integral part of the Voatsiperifery identity. Unlike classic cultivated peppers, dominated by the pungency of piperine, Voatsiperifery is distinguished by its <strong data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"675\">low aggressiveness on the palate<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"723\">exceptional aromatic complexity<\/strong>. It is also said to have <strong>healing<\/strong> properties <strong>(wound treatment)<\/strong> and to relieve <strong>respiratory, dermatological, venereal or sexual ailments<\/strong>.  <\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3403\" data-end=\"3942\"><p data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3942\"><strong data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3418\">Culinary<\/strong>: This pepper is a popular local condiment for spicing up dishes. It often replaces sakay (traditional hot pepper) in Malagasy cuisine. Tsiperifery berries are crushed or ground to season meats, sauces and broths, providing a &#8220;forest&#8221; spice with woody flavors. Locals even call it &#8220;sakaiala&#8221;<strong>(forest pepper<\/strong>) or &#8220;sakarivonala&#8221;<strong>(forest ginger<\/strong>), depending on the morphology of the berries (Razafimandimby et al., 2017).   <\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3943\" data-end=\"4341\"><p data-start=\"3945\" data-end=\"4341\"><strong data-start=\"3945\" data-end=\"3968\">Ritual and spiritual<\/strong>: Some traditional beliefs attribute<strong> protective powers<\/strong> to tsiperifery.
